Summer Camp Scholarships for Future Women Pilots
Powder Puff Pilot, a Denver-based web retailer that specializes in pilot gear and accessories for women, announced Zoriah Carter, 9, as the winner
of one week at summer camp at Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum. The Denver
resident, who just completed third grade at Ricks Center for Gifted Children at the University of
Denver Denver, will attend the half-day Science of Flight program held at the museum on the
former Lowry Air Force Base in Denver. The Wings’ summer aviation program teaches secondto
sixth-graders about the four forces that enable an airplane to fly, as well as how to complete a
flight plan, fly a simulator, and build different types of airplanes.
Zoriah submitted the winning essay about her role model, Amelia Earhart, who she described as
"a very intelligent and brave aviator." She portrayed Amelia as unconventional even as a child,
"…when she was a kid, a girl was not supposed to wear jeans but Amelia always wore jeans."
Zoriah—the daughter of Jayna Langford and granddaughter of Sam and Jennifer Taylor of
Glendale, Colorado—has always wanted to fly, and aspires to become a pilot. Her interest
intensified after a recent school visit to the Wings museum, where she was particularly
impressed by all the airplanes and the flight simulator.
"One of the reasons I founded the company was to encourage and inspire girls to pursue
aviation," said Sue Hughes, owner of Powder Puff Pilot and scholarship provider, "but Zoriah’s
already there! Her essay clearly revealed evidence of research, admiration, and reflection. I
hope this Wings experience will thrust her toward a life-long love of flying or perhaps an aviation
career."
Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum’s mission is to educate and inspire people of all
ages about aviation and space endeavors of the past, present, and future. Wings is committed
to meeting the educational needs of its community and its leaders in aviation, math, and
science. Located in the former Lowry AFB on the east side of Denver, Wings is housed in the
World War II-era Hangar. For more information about Summer Camp at Wings, go to
