Women Airforce Service Pilots DVD
A panel discussion moderated by Jeane Slone
Members of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) share their little-known experiences ferrying aircraft from the factories to the bases for the servicemen to fly during World War II.
Recorded at the Veteran's Memorial Building in Santa Rosa, California on September 19, 2009, six women relive exciting adventures of tow-targeting and flying over 77 types of aircraft to over 134 bases.
While researching her historical novel, She Flew Bombers. moderator Jeane Slone made contact with a number of female pilots from World War II. Among those appearing on the DVD, which captures the unedited proceedings of the event, are Nancye E. Crout, Florence E. Wheeler, Betty Deuser Budde, Alice-Jean Starr, Doris Wanty, and Adeline Ellison.
The WASP who served their country during our crucial war years did not receive military benefits until 1977. Among the 1074 women to qualify and train to become WASP, 38 were killed on duty. In May 2010, 300 surviving WASP and the families of those who had passed received Congressional Gold Medals.
